Pseudomonas
Pseudomonas is a common yet tough variety of gram-negative bacteria which has the ability to survive in harsh environments. It is found on plants, in soil and in water. Those in good health can even have pseudomonas growing on their skin in moist areas such as the armpit.
For most people who come into contact with pseudomonas, there will be no ill effect but some individuals can present with a mild rash or an infection in the ears and/or eyes. In instances where someone is already sick or has a weakened immune system, however, pseudomonas can cause serious infection and even be life-threatening. For this reason, it is a genuine concern for healthcare premises such as hospitals and brings particular risk to those who are most vulnerable including those in intensive care, surgery patients, premature babies, and individuals with cancer or severe burns.
